The skin containing a large amount of alkaline oxides (CaO, Na2O, etc.) is called alkaline electrode. The electrode mainly relies on the decomposition of carbonate (such as CaCO3 in marble) to decompose CO2 as a protective gas. In the arc column atmosphere, H acts as a protective gas. The H partial pressure in the arc column atmosphere is low, and CAF2 and H at high temperature of fluorite combine to generate hydrogen fluoride HF, thus reducing the hydrogen content in the weld, so the alkaline electrode is also called low hydrogen electrode.

The welding rod is used for welding and its role in the welding process:

1. Improve the stability of arc combustion

The light welding rod without coating is not easy to ignite the arc, and even if it burns, it cannot burn stably.

2. Protection of molten pool

During the welding process, oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor in the air are submerged in the weld, which will adversely affect the weld, not only forming pores, but also reducing the mechanical properties of the weld, and even causing cracks.

After the electrode coating is melted, a large amount of gas is wrapped in the arc and molten pool, which will reduce the interaction between the metal liquid and the air. As the weld cools, the deposited layer forms a layer of slag that covers the surface of the weld, protecting the weld metal, allowing it to cool slowly and reducing the possibility of porosity.

3. Ensure weld deoxidation and remove sulfur and phosphorus impurities

  Copper electrode custom factory said,Although the welding process is protected, it is inevitable that a small amount of oxygen will enter the molten pool, oxidize the metal and alloy elements, burn the alloy elements, and reduce the quality of the weld. Therefore, it is necessary to add a reducing agent (such as manganese, silicon, titanium, aluminum, etc.) to the electrode coating to reduce the oxide into the molten pool.

4. Supplementary welding alloying elements

Due to the high arc temperature, the alloy elements of the weld metal will evaporate and burn, thereby reducing the mechanical properties of the weld.

Therefore, it is necessary to add appropriate alloying elements to the weld by coating to compensate for the burning of alloying elements and ensure or improve the mechanical properties of the weld.

5. Improve welding productivity and reduce spatter

However, because the welding core is located in the center of the arc and the temperature is high, the welding core melts first, and the coating melts later.
